While I Buddie the dog, dog of mystery, have been know for having a bit of levity in his reports back to headquarters, I would like to take a moment to focus on this day nine eleven.
While my charge has written about the loss of human life that day when the towers went down, I would like to mention the loss of canine life as well.
On that day many K-nine police dogs were placed in their kennels by their handlers to keep them safe. Little did those brave men and women imagine that those mighty towers would crumble and fall at the hands of an unseen coward of an enemy, taking not only many of their fellow officers with them but their beloved canine partners as well.
In the days that followed countless search and rescue dogs, police dogs from across the nation and civilian volunteers combed the debris of ground zero looking for survivors and then for remains of loved ones to bring home to rest.
These dogs were invaluable in their ability to locate survivors and the remains of loved ones. Many dogs succumbed to exhaustion, dehydration and injuries in their efforts to not leave anyone behind. Some had to be put down to alleviate their suffering.
In the eight years that have followed most if not all of those canines have passed away and moved on to a better place, but most of their brave handlers have not. They continue to live with diseases, nightmares and a system that has turned their back on the needs of these amazing people.
While I love my country and know it has a lot of great qualities, we cannot as a nation forget the sacrifices made by countless thousands on that day and the days that followed.
When we as a nation called out for help, many showed up, even those not asked, to assist, Now it is our turn as a nation to make sure that those who gave so much are not forgotten and their sacrifice diminished.
Please reach out in anyway that you can to ensure that the workers of ground zero and their families are helped in the same way that their loved ones reach out to a shattered nation in our time of need.
Mostly never forget the lessons learned from nine eleven, the lessons of love, self-sacrifice and fortitude that continue to be with us today.
Do not let the sacrifices of all those brave men, women and their canines be for nothing. Let their families know that we as a nation will be forever indebted to them for their ultimate sacrifice.
this is Buddie the dog, dog of mystery, reporting to you from the heart, keep the memory alive.
Just stopping by to say hey.
